Auckland Cup 2023
The Auckland Team Sailing Regionals was held over the 30-31 of March out of the Royal Akarana Yacht Club, with 21 teams on the final entry list the stage was set for a great regatta.
The first day started with a trickle of breeze from the wrong direction and a handful of races were attempted and led to a few time-outs. The wind soon swung and filled in from the forecast south-west and steadily built through the day. The race committee led by RO Paul Wotton did an amazing job to get through 97 races on the first day! Auckland Grammar Blue were leading the way in the gold division winning all but one of their races in round robin 1. Sacred Heart College and Westlake Boys were equally leading the way in the silver, dropping only one race each.
Day 2 started with even less wind than the first, leading to a delay onshore for a while before the wind started to fill in from the north. Round Robin 2 was started with the race committee hoping that we could get through enough of the round robin to make the races stand towards the overall results.
Around 2:00 it was decided that there would not have sufficient time to get to a point of completion with Round Robin 2, so the top 4 teams from the first round progressed to semi-finals, with the two Auckland Grammar teams facing off in one side and St Kents A racing Westlake Boys A in the other. AGS Gold progress 2-1 over the AGS Blue team. St Kents moved past Westlake Boys 2-0 in the other half of the draw.
St. Kents managed to take control of the final, winning the first two races to secure the victory for the regatta! This was a huge victory for them and all the sailors were stoked crossing the finish line after the winning race. Westlake Boys also managed to beat AGS Blue in the petit final 2-0 to take third place.
The girls final was contested by Westlake Girls and Dio – in a repeat of last years girls final. Westlake Girls took the racing to Dio and managed to go one better than last year and take the finals 2-0 after winning 2-1 in 2022.
