Abaco Christmas Regatta Day 2
Sailors arrived at Royal Akarana for the second day of the regatta to be greeted with a light northerly breeze, with Okahu Bay presenting absolutely perfect conditions for more teams racing. After the coaches briefing recapping some of the learning points from day one, all the teams hit the water eager to have another crack at each other.
Whangarei Boys continued their strong series, going a second day unbeaten, but being pushed harder than the previous day. The two races between Nelson/Timaru/Takapuna combined and the Whangarei Boys showed the umpires and coaches some of the closest racing we’ve seen yet, with the boys team saving a win just a few metres from the finish line. Otago Girls and Waiheke High School saw an improvement today picking up more wins than they did on day one.
The race committee continued to do a fantastic job, getting through another 30 races by 13:00, leaving plenty of time for the teams to come ashore and do some work with the coaches before the Prada World Series continued out in the harbour.
Overall results are still being dominated by the Whangarei Boys with 20 wins from 20 races, but the other five teams are all still pretty tight – with only two or three wins separating most of the teams. It’s definitely all still to play for on the final day of the regatta, bring on day 3!!
